Accuse him of thinking abstract, but you cannot accuse Anurag Kashyap of following the stereotype. In GULAAL, the storyteller attempts to tell multiple stories in one film. Student politics, a separate state for Rajputs, an intense love story that has a disastrous end… Kashyap's GULAAL is intelligent, intense, disturbing, poignant and expectedly, cerebral.

GULAAL is thought-provoking and has the power to engage you at various points of the narrative. Honestly, it takes time to get the hang of things. Actually, you don't take to the sundry characters and the relationships instantly, but the complex relationships, their motives, the culmination, each layer is peeled as the story progresses.

Yet, at the same time, a film like GULAAL isn't the type that would cut ice with every strata of moviegoers. The expletives are aplenty [not required, actually; why does Kashyap have them in film after film?], the second hour meanders at times and most importantly, the material restricts it from reaching out to a universal audience.

Dileep [Raj Singh Chaudhary] comes to Jaipur to study. Here, he comes in contact with Rananjay Singh Ransa [Abhimanyu Singh], Jadwal [Pankaj Jha], Anuja [Jesse Randhawa], Dukey Bana [Kay Kay Menon] and Kiran [Ayesha Mohan].

Dukey Bana convinces Ransa to contest the college elections on behalf of the Rajputana party; Ransa and Kiran battle it for General Secretary's post. The rivalry between the two gangs intensifies and Ransa is forced to withdraw, which he resists. Eventually, this leads to his murder by Karan [Aditya Srivastav]. Dileep is compelled to contest elections in Ransa's place and made to win.

After losing the elections, Kiran tries winning Dileep's trust, gets close to him and pretends to fall in love. As he tries to fit into the shoes of the General Secretary, an insecure Dileep gets emotionally dependent on Kiran. Dileep finds himself trapped in political manoeuvres. It dawns to him that he is being used by Dukey.

Dukey Bana is masterminding a Rajputana movement, to have a separate state ruled by Rajputs. In a gamut of red faces [gulaal is put over the faces to mask their true identity], Dileep sees the truth behind Dukey and his actions.

Kiran takes charge as the General Secretary. As soon as in power, she refuses to meet Dileep and tries to get close to Dukey using her feminine charm. A lovelorn and rejected Dileep gets more and more frustrated, abusive and violent in desperation. Blinded by his love for Kiran, Dileep goes into a frenzy, becoming a sorry and inevitable victim of circumstances.

GULAAL isn't for the faint-hearted. Nor is it for those looking for escapist cinema. Anurag Kashyap movies are dark [this one's gruesome as well] and you either take to them or you don't. There's no in between!

A few individualistic sequences leave a profound impact. Take the sequence when Raj Singh Chaudhary is stripped naked and thrown into a dark chamber. Take the sequence when Aditya Srivastav kills Abhimanyu Singh and the dialogue that precedes that sequence. Take the sequence when Ayesha Mohan does a complete somersault and refuses to meet Raj.

GULAAL has its share of shortcomings. With so many stories running parallel, the second hour takes a really long time to wind up things and reach the culmination. Besides, the confrontation in the end, between Kay Kay and Raj Singh Chaudhary, could've been shortened. Too much dialoguebaazi, even after Kay Kay has been shot.

Also, if the film talks of today's times, how come the police are shown as passive watchers to all the killings, abductions, murders, et al? Even the media, which is hungry for the smallest of story, is absent. The writing could've been tighter.

Rajeev Ravi's cinematography is first-rate. Dialogues are acidic and the expletives are difficult to absorb after a point. Piyush Mishra's lyrics are thought-provoking.

The film is embellished with supreme performances. Kay Kay is in splendid form. Raj Singh Chaudhary has the talent. Aditya Srivastav does well, but deserved more footage. Piyush Mishra is excellent. Abhimanyu Singh leaves a strong impact. Ayesha Mohan is top notch. Mahie Gill is perfect. Deepak Dobriyal is first-rate. Pankaj Jha is effective. Jesse Randhawa gets no scope.

On the whole, GULAAL is interesting in parts. The film may appeal to those looking for a change from the run-of-the-mill fares week after week. Its business will be best at multiplexes of metros.

Bollywood Movie Jai Veeru Review

In the good old days, formula films comprised of 6 songs, 7 action films, 5 blast and chase sequences, a few emotional moments, a couple of comic scenes and of course, the romantic portions. A paisa vasool entertainer was what the doctors prescribed for the ailing industry then.

JAI VEERU remains faithful to the formula, except that it borrows from a not-too-popular Hollywood film BULLETPROOF [1996; starring Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler].

After attempting a real-dark-grim film I - PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN, director Puneet Sira plays to the masses this time. With JAI VEERU, the target audience is not the thinking viewer, but those looking for a complete farce in terms of plotline. Expectedly, JAI VEERU caters to the hardcore masses that are yet to embrace new-age cinema in this multiplex era.

Veeru [Kunal Khemu] is a small-time crook who steals cars and sells them to a buyer. By a chance encounter, he meets Jai [Fardeen Khan], a mechanic, who can break into cars. They become friends; the mutual admiration culminates into a fine partnership of crime.

But an unexpected twist changes everything. Jai and Veeru feel betrayed by the other. One person who hates them more than they hate each other is the ruthless gangster Tejpal [Arbaaz Khan], who wants to kill both of them. Jai and Veeru are on the run. Will they survive?

JAI VEERU is 2 hours of varied entertainment and the entertainment in this case is, good, average and bad. It's good in parts [a few twists if you haven't watched the Hollywood film]. It's average in parts because the pace picks up and falls intermittently. And it's pure bad because the writer, in an effort to pack just about everything, throws logic out of the window. The story jumps from one track to another, instead of sticking to the main plot.

Puneet Sira's direction is strictly okay. Bappa Lahiri's music is tuneful. A couple of tunes have the spark, especially 'Tenu Leke'. Cinematography [K. Rajkumar] is alright. The action scenes [Allan Amin] are top notch. The production values are tacky.

Fardeen Khan is below average. Kunal Khemu is better; the masses will like him. Dia Mirza and Anjana Sukhani don't have much to do, although Dia's character has an interesting twist in the climax. Arbaaz Khan is passable. Govind Namdeo is average. Rajesh Khattar and Rakesh Bedi are okay.

On the whole, JAI VEERU has something for the hardcore masses, but nothing for the elite/classes. Its business, therefore, will be restricted to the single screens, but multiplexes will be terrible.

Telugu Movie Drona Review

The Telugu film Drona has been in the news for National-Award winning actress Priya Mani's bare-dare act in a bikini!

The film is a regular masala one; a smorgasbord of the usual ingredients, typical of Telugu cinema action, romance, songs, dance, an item number by Rakhi Sawant al. There is not much variation from the staple elements. Director Karuna Kumar treads the oft-trodden path.

The storyline has the run-of-the-mill elements like lost and found son, mother pining for the son in absentia, a duty-bound conscientious police-officer-father, a jewellery heist and eventually the victory of good over evil.

It's only in the second half that the actual story unfolds. Drona (Nitin) runs away from home as his father (Mukesh Rishi) chides him for taking his gun. He resurfaces after a decade and lives with his parents as Chandu but does not reveal his true identity. His neighbour Indu (Priya Mani) who begins to love him finds out who he really is and reveals the fact. But here comes the twist. Nitin has a past which haunts and follows him.

Meanwhile, Sarkar (Kelly Dorjee) and his henchmen are on the hunt for Drona and his friend Bose, and they finally find Drona and put him behind bars. The mother Meenakshi (Seeta) is heartbroken and the father is duty bound. Drona then narrates his tale of how he was kidnapped by Sarkar (who also kidnapped several other young children), trained in an island, made to rob jewels etc.

There is nothing much to write home about the script. It is a motley of things and ideas. Some parts of the film defy logic and the scenes are weird. Neither the camera work nor music elevates the film. The only thing which is perhaps worthy of mention is the action. The fight sequences are well orchestrated; a lot of effort and special effects have gone into them. For example, bodies glide and suspend in mid-air. Then we have Nitin shooting at men in a helicopter all the while riding a bike.

Nitin revels in these action sequences. And it is fun to see him in them. He also shakes his leg with absolute ease. Unfortunately for him, the script does not have much to offer as far as acting is concerned.

Priya Mani is ooh la la glamorous and certainly ups the oomph quotient of the film by indulging in skin show. Kelly Dorjee seems quite out of place and rather uncomfortable while Mukesh Rishi plays a police officer for the nth time. Seeta plays the pining mother well. As for Rakhi Sawant, she doesn't set the screen ablaze with her item number.

Director Karuna Kumar's potboiler seems rather disastrous. Watch it only if you are a fan of Nitin, or if you want to see Priya Mani's bare-dare act.

Venkata In Sankata Review

with his new Kannada film Venkata In Sankata, Ramesh Arvind proves once again that he is an actor and a director par excellence. The film is a perfect entertainer for the family audience.

Ramesh has already directed two comedies earlier but he can proudly say that Venkata In Sankata is his best comedy yet. What makes the film enjoyable is its great packaging and excellent performances from veteran actors artists and newcomers.

Ramesh, who has written the screenplay along with story writer Thotapalli Madhu, has filled each sequence with comedy elements even though it may be slapstick at times. Venkata In Sankata comes as a breath of fresh air after watching bad films week after week. Ramesh has no pretentions on that count because he makes it very clear that logic is the last thing that he had in mind when he scripted the film. The hilarious first half is followed by an even better second half.

The absent-minded lecturer, the strict vice-principal, a terrorizing lady inspector, the police officer who doubles up as a security watchman are the characters that make you laugh uncontrollably whenever they appear on the screen.

There are some minor letdowns too. The climax is unconvincing, as it is unlikely that a Prime Minister would be present in a function with such weak security. The so-called jehadis are unbelievable too.

Ramesh plays Inspector Venkata, who lands into trouble because of his assistant Laddu. Venkata's grandmother takes him to a fraudulent palmist for advise, but he gets hooked to the palmist's daughter. Later, Venkata poses as a college student to pursue his investigation. What happens later is a laugh riot.

Ramesh puts his heart and soul into Venkata. His fans can enjoy his thrilling stunt sequences. Devadas Koppikad is brilliant. Ramesh and Devadas share good chemistry on screen.

Sharmila Mandre manages to look pleasing on screen. Both Meghana and Anusha look hot and have done justice to their roles. All the veteran artistes -- Umashri, Sanketh Kashi, Daththanna, M S Umesh, Bank Janardhan and Karibasavayya -- have done a good job. Telugu film actor Thotapalli is really funny.

Ricky Kej has composed two good tunes -- Kuniyonu Baa and Rain song. P K H Doss is brilliant behind the camera. This entertainer is worth a watch.

Delhi 6 Review

Let's cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the bus this time.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it's more than evident now. First AKS, then RANG DE BASANTI, now DELHI 6. A two-liner of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India. But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew.

Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the point. In fact, the entire first half is dedicated to the sundry characters in the bylanes of old Delhi, where several stories run parallel with the main plot... The two warring brothers [Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra] and the wall that divides the two; the daughter of the house [Sonam Kapoor] aspires to be an 'Indian Idol' contestant; a moneylender's [Prem Chopra] wife has an illicit relationship with one of his lecherous debtors [Cyrus Sahukar]; an 'untouchable' [Divya Dutta] makes more sense than the so-called thekedaars of samaj; a friend of the family [Rishi Kapoor] has still not forgotten his first love [Tanvi Azmi]. Oh yes, there's also a 'Kaala Bandar' who spreads havoc in the locality. Really, Rakeysh tries to pack in multiple stories in those 2.18 hours.

But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic sequences, you don't carry the film home. The film is engaging in bits and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring and the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, 'Hey guys, you okay?'

DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to realize that how wrong he was.

The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with open arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam Kapoor], who wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure, to whom Roshan is destined to lose his heart.

That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is evident in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and director succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the locality.

But the screenplay isn't foolproof. The romantic track is the weakest link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the ending is so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the end, when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In fact, ridiculous. What was the need to have this sequence? It makes no sense. Even the Ram Leela sequences, interspersed at regular intervals, are forced in the screenplay.

Rakeysh's handling of the subject is exemplary at places. But the writing [faulty at times] as also the execution of the material isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of moviegoers. A.R. Rahman's music is outstanding; it's easily amongst his finest works. 'Masakali', 'Ye Dilli Hai Mere Yaar', 'Rehna Tu', 'Maula' and 'Genda Phool' are amazing tracks. Ditto for Prasoon Joshi's lyrics; they're gems. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is brilliant. Watch the Jama Masjid sequence [breath-taking] or the camera movements in the bylanes of old Delhi. Just one word to describe the output: Incredible!

Abhishek doesn't work. Also, his American accent looks fake. Sonam is likable. Waheeda Rahman enacts her part well. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. He deserved a better role. Amongst supporting actors, Om Puri [powerful], Pawan Malhotra [flawless], Vijay Raaz [tremendous], Deepak Dobriyal [genuine], Divya Dutta [admirable] and Cyrus Sahukar [likable] leave a mark.

Prem Chopra is alright. Atul Kulkarni looks like a buffoon. And what is Raghvir Yadav doing in this film? Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, K.K. Raina, Akhilendra Mishra and Dayashanker Pandey are passable. Amitabh Bachchan's presence in the penultimate minutes fails to evoke any reaction.

On the whole, DELHI 6 has a terribly boring beginning [first hour], an absorbing middle [second half] and a weak end [climax]. At the box-office, the business is bound to be divided. The film may record bountiful collections at multiplexes in its opening weekend. The popular music as also the fact that there's no major opposition will benefit the film in the initial days. But the business at single screens as also the mass belt will be a shocking contrast. However, the cracks will start appearing sooner than expected, even at plexes. Thumbs down!

Most of us have heard, witnessed or perhaps had a first-hand experience of supernatural. The present-day generation may, perhaps, term it as wild imagination or hallucination, while the believers may have their point of view. Mohit and screenplay writer Shagufta Rafique's characters in Raaz - The Mystery Continues are believers and non-believers, both.

Mohit smartly builds up the atmosphere. Sample these: Emraan and Kangna's first encounter at a mall and minutes later, inside an elevator; the New Year bash when Kangna is 'attacked' by spirits; Kangna's experience in her bathtub and also when she looks at the mirror; Kangna almost jumping off a cliff; the highpoint sequence, when angry bulls attack Emraan and Kangna. Incredible sequences all! Mohit has handled the most difficult portions with panache.

However, the entire flashback part, towards the pre-climax, is not as convincing. The ending too could've been better in terms of writing, although Mohit has filmed it exceptionally well.

Mohit's choice of the subject as also the actors is right. This is, without doubt, his finest effort to date. Shagufta's screenplay is watertight at most times. Like always, the Bhatts come up with a lilting musical score and at least two songs -- 'Soniyo' [Raju Singh] and 'Maahi' [Sharib-Toshi] -- are first-rate compositions. Ravi Walia's cinematography is up to the mark. The effects are impressive.

On the acting front, both Emraan and Kangna vie for top honours. Emraan is excellent. He conveys a lot through facial expressions and that's the sign of a proficient actor. He's just getting better and better with every film. Kangna is top notch. After FASHION, this one's another power-packed performance from the actress. Adhyayan Suman is super-confident and registers a strong impact, especially towards the climax. He shows promise. Jackie Shroff is quite okay in a brief role.

On the whole, Raaz - The Mystery Continues is rich in the horror quotient and that is one of its major USPs, besides the highly competent performances by its principal cast and a lilting musical score. At the box-office, this one will continue the winning streak of Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films. The 4-day weekend [Monday, January 26 in a holiday] will only cement its status further. Go for it!

Those who care about India: Dont See Slumdog Millionaire

The emperor’s new clothes! That’s “Slumdog Millionaire” for you… Five minutes into this celebrated patchwork of illogical clichés and you are struck by the jarring dialogues. The cumbersome delivery in a language which doesn’t come naturally to most of the actors sounds like someone scratching on walls with one’s finger nails; it ruins the possibility of a connection… Had this film been made by an Indian director, it would’ve been trashed as a rotting old hat, which literally stands out only because of its stench, but since the man making it happens to be from the West, we’re all left celebrating the emperor’s new clothes. The film borrows an undoubtedly interesting narrative style – from films like “City of God” – but then uses it to weave in a collection of clichés from the Third World’s underbelly for the viewing pleasure of a First World audience. The real slumdog in the movie is not the main protagonist but India as a whole… The makers and those celebrating this movie’s hard-to-spot brilliance are actually serving up India as the accidental millionaire, which in fact happens to be a slumdog… and like shameless fools we are gloating over its success without realising that it makes a caricature out of India.

The film does not have the sincerity and honesty of a “Salaam Bombay” or a “City of Joy” and nor does this slime covered fairy tale have the integrity or the rootedness of the above mentioned scripts, or even a “Shantaram” for that matter; the soundtrack and the performance of the child actors are the only bits in the film which live up to the hype. The real slumdogs who’ve hit the jackpot after wallowing in acres of human waste are the makers of this film who are now raking in millions while those court jesters who’ve critiqued the film and showered tributes and awards need to ask themselves why, scores of years after our independence, they still feel the need to suck up to the gora sahibs. It’s not a question of xenophobia… it’s definitely a well cinematographed film… but the film has no soul, especially after little Jamal has jumped off the train and become a teenager… The rest of the film is just a modern version of the West’s view of India where slums, slumdogs and Bollywoodian clichés have replaced the elephants and snake charmers. It’s a well made caricature of a country and a caricature can never be a Mona Lisa, for a masterpiece can’t be one dimensional juxtaposition of sadistic extremes… and that’s my grouse with the celebrations…

And I say all this not because I don’t know what is India. I know its poverty and the real statistics around it a little better than most others – especially the Indian film critics who have given “Slumdog…” an average of 4 to 4.5 stars! But the fact is that the film’s entire narration seems like the germination of a terribly sadistic and complex mind with the sole aim of satisfying the western idea of India – and its new found growth instincts at their cost - and it is done through a combination of illogical happenings in order to show everything in a disgustingly negative vein. Not that it doesn’t exist, but it surely doesn’t exist in this fictitious manner. While “Salaam Bombay” had realism, “Slumdog…” is just every scrap of dirt picked up from every corner and piled up together to try and hit back at the growing might of India. And the awards almost seem like a sadistic effort to show the world – look we knew that this was India, and these are the slumdogs we are outsourcing our jobs to. It stinks of racial arrogance and it’s such a shame now on second thought to see the Indian faces – including that of the undoubted master, AR Rahman - celebrating its success. There is nothing positive about the film and it seems that a deranged sadist has painted his insecure negative self in each and every character of the movie. It illogically shows every negative thing about India happening in the protagonist’s life... slums, open-air lavatories, riots, underworld, prostitution, brothels, child labour, begging, blinding and maiming of kids to make them into ‘better beggars’, petty peddlers, traffic jams, irresponsible call centre executives… everything apart from western pedophiles roaming around in Indian streets!! And its winning of so many awards and nominations only goes on to prove strongly that the paradigm of cinema and recognition of films are in the hands of a few retarded imperialistic minds. It’s a crying shame that our media hasn’t seen through this ruse and is touting “Slumdog’s” nominations to claim that India is shining at the Oscars, while in fact it is lauding a film that mocks and ridicules the idea of ‘India’, pigeonholing its identity into the straitjacket of depraved poverty for a global audience.

When the West wanted Indians to embrace them and their companies to come to India and capture the lucrative markets, suddenly we had all the Indian women, some very beautiful and some not necessarily so, winning all the Miss Universe and Miss Worlds. Today, they are in a crisis and India is looking unstoppable despite its slums and poverty, and they are losing their businesses to us. Isn’t it the best time to paint India as the Slumdog Millionaire?? All in all, the film is nothing but an endorsement of an erstwhile imperial mindset of the West and its blinkered vision of India. An English master has made an Indian slumdog. Don’t even waste your time watching this film in the theatres. It sucks and there is nothing great in it as a film too. Kannada Movie Circus Review

After a long fight with director S Mahendar, producer-cum-director Dayal Padmanabh is out with Kannada movie Circus. The director has really stressed hard himself in weaving the story of the movie Circus. Golden star Ganesh's movie runs like a railway compartment and reaches the happy end. The movie is a pure entertainer. It will fulfill the dreams of the director, who is expecting Rs 7 crores.

Dayal's story, dialogues and the direction and Ganesh's performance will really rock the audiences. The movie could have been failed if Ganesh had not given his usual performance. The director has got good grip on the story, which runs like a train facing bridges and tunnels here and there. He has got strong hold on the story, which looks like compartments. And the of the movie has filled the fuel to the train to run faster. Shekhar Chandru's camera done a magic in the movie.

Life is like a train and if train misses the track, then it is sure to fall in ditch. Ganesh and his other three friends play a prank, which challenges all the lives of the passengers in the train. How they manage to save all the lives is the whole gist of the movie.

Like the railway station, the movie is also filled with many people. Sometimes Dayal fails to take the advantage of all these characters and he pulls the chain of the train here and there. Ganesh and his three friends, terrorist who are trying to explode the train, the heroine, who does not understand the hero, Sadhu Kokila and Avinash all look like passenger in the raiway station. Dayal has created Ganesh's character like a train engine, which drags all along with it.

Ganesh has got a different look in this movie. He does not have too much of artificial things as it used to be in his movies. Shekhar Chandru's camera, which seems another proof to this, has caught the changing feelings on his face properly. Though Dayal himself has written the dialogues of the movie, Yogaraj Bhat's way is clearly visible here and there.

Actress Archana Gupta, who does not know Kannada, has failed to lure the Kannada Audiences. She is merely a doll, who does not even understand what the other characters around her are speaking. Even the director has failed to use the actress in a proper way.

There is no liveliness in the music of the movie. Songs like 'Akashakke Yeni', 'Baro Geleya', 'Pisugudade' will not touch the hearts of the audiences. A song from Dr. Raj starrer movie Amar Gite, 'Jeeva Huvagide' has been remixed in the movie. Even this song has also failed to impress the audiences. 'Jinke Mari' fame Emile's music runs monotonously through the movie.

Director Dayal would have been more successful, if he had given a touch of real life to the movie. Instead he has followed the success formula, which has turned the movie a pure entertainer. One can watch once and enjoy it.

Govinda Daughter In Bollywood Moives

2008 has been a decisive year for Govinda. After working with Mani Ratnam he has decided to work only with directors of a certain caliber.

And now in 2009 Govinda has far more to look forward to. His daughter Narmada will finally be facing the camera and that too with a home production.

Confirming these radical developments in his life Govinda says, "After weighing all the pros and cons I decided I'm the best person to do the needful. I don't want anyone else no matter how well-meaning to take the credit for launching my daughter. So yes, Narmada will finally be launched anytime in 2009."

The director to do the needful for Govinda will be finalized in the next couple of weeks. Those on Govinda's wish-list are Nikhil Advani and Shaad Ali.

"Ideally," says the anxious father, "I'd have liked Narmada to be launched by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He's among our best. But since that's not possible we're looking at some other names. My daughter has to be directed by someone who has a vision and an aesthetic sense and also respects the work that I do."

Continuing to speak on his favourite subject Govinda says, "I've struggled all my life and I continue to do so. All kinds of strange stories are planted about me. The question is not, why. But by whom? Narmada has also faced very harsh and hurtful incidents (she was involved in a terrible road accident) so early in her life. I feel today she's emotionally equipped to face the camera."

While focusing on his daughter's career Govinda has also taken some hard career decisions for himself. "Six of my releases are ready. But now, after my so-called comeback I've again stopped signing new films. After working with Mani Ratnam I can't go back to doing chalta hai roles in routine films. I'll work only with directors who are as organized and disciplined as Mani Ratnam. He's clear-headed about everything."

Shooting in the jungles wasn't easy. "But it wasn't so tough either," laughs Govinda. "I've spent my childhood in a village. So I'm used to being cut off from city life. Shooting in the jungles with Mani, Abhishek and Aishwarya was very invigorating."

Says Govinda, "For now I'm saying no to all future assignments until I get something comparable with Mani's film. But I'm in negotiation with Ravi Chopra for his next film after Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which is now complete and being released in February, and for the sequel to Partner with Salman and David. But for now, I'm focusing on giving my daughter the best career launch any father can give."

Chandni Chowk to China Review

In the initial years of his career, Ramesh Sippy made two gems that we remember [and cherish] to this date -- SEETA AUR GEETA and SHOLAY. SEETA AUR GEETA was about twin-sisters -- the docile and the aggressive. SHOLAY, of course, needs no introduction. Yet, to update the unacquainted, Ramgarh is gripped by a terror called Gabbar. Resultantly, Thakur recruits two men to put an end to Gabbar's tyranny.

Nikhil Advani pays homage to Ramesh Sippy's movies by merging SHOLAY and SEETA AUR GEETA. But this concoction called CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA is as bland as khichdi.

Come to think of it, Nikhil Advani had everything going for him. It's a dream project, what with heavyweights such as Warner Bros., Ramesh Sippy, Akhay Kumar and Gordon Liu agreeing to be a part of this mammoth project. But Nikhil slips and trips, falling flat on his face.

A masala film is always welcome. In fact, two desi films [RAB NE BANA DI JODI and GHAJINI] have been lapped up by the junta in a big way, but CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA is an unbearable masala fare that insults the intelligence of the moviegoer.

The problem with CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA is that it lacks a watertight screenplay to keep you glued for those 2.45 hours. Agreed, you don't look for logic and reason in hardcore potboilers, but the least the director and his team of writers could do is provide loads of entertainment. Sadly, writers Shridhar Raghavan and Rajat Aroraa make mincemeat of a plot that had the potential to woo viewers from Chandni Chowk to China to Chicago to Cape Town.

So, what's the verdict then? Enjoy Chinese food instead. This one's a big, big, big letdown!

Sidhu [Akshay Kumar] cuts vegetables at a roadside food stall in Chandni Chowk in Delhi. He longs to escape his dreary existence and looks for shortcuts -- with astrologers, tarot readers and fake fakirs -- believing anything except himself, despite his father figure Dada's [Mithun Chakraborty] best efforts.

The story takes a turn when two strangers from China claim he's a reincarnation of a war hero and take him to China. Thanks to the devious translator, a conman by the name Chopstick [Ranvir Shorey], little does he know that he is being taken to the Chinese village of vicious smuggler Hojo [Gordon Liu].

Therefore, Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Chopstick, who instigates dreams of a delicious future and forgets to reveal the perils, which await him. Along the way, he meets Sakhi [Deepika Padukone], who has embarked on a journey to pay homage to the land of her birth and her dead father and twin.

Hojo catches up with Sidhu and eliminates Dada right in front of everyone. Sidhu seeks revenge and finds the one man who will make him a Kungfu expert and set the village free from Hojo's tyranny.

On face-value, what do you expect from CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA? Laughter unlimited, great martial arts, a glimpse of China. But what's served on the platter is so insipid, so lame, so senseless that you wonder if there was a script in the first place. The comic scenes [that make you laugh] are few and far between. The scenes depicting martial arts are hardly exciting. Also, barring the Great Wall of China, don't expect China darshan here!

There are big holes in the script. Sample these... * How and why do the two oppressed Chinese men suddenly land up in Chandni Chowk in Delhi? Also, how do they zero on Ranvir Shorey? No explanations offered. * Deepika's track of visiting China is trite. Wasn't the twin-sister, an infant, thrown off the Great Wall of China? How did Gordon Liu suddenly decide to bring her up? * Similarly, Deepika's father was also pushed from the Great Wall, but he survives. Akshay too is beaten black and blue and thrown off [coincidentally, from the same place -- Great Wall], but is rescued mid-air by Deepika's father. Miracles never cease to occur, must add.

Post interval, Akshay undergoes a gruelling training session, but not once does the preparation give an impression that Akshay is seething with anger and vengeance. That's because the director has injected humour in these scenes and that takes away the seriousness from the plot. The climax is equally contrived and hence, makes no impact whatsoever.

Although the year 2009 has just begun, this film is sure to be a strong contender in Razzies in two departments mainly -- direction and writing. Nikhil Advani goes horribly wrong this time. As for the writers, well, they ought to take a crash course in film writing pronto. The songs are okay, with the title track and 'Naam Hai Sidhu' being the pick of the lot. The stunts [Dee Dee Ku] are plain mediocre. Even the dated martial arts' movies produced in the East offered better stuff. Himman Dhamija's cinematography lacks the picture perfect look.

Akshay Kumar is the sole saving grace, but the director hasn't tapped his potential to the fullest. Deepika Padukone is passable. Gordon Liu is decent. Ranvir Shorey is functional. Mithun Chakraborty is bland. Roger Yuan, Deepika's father in the film, is fair.

On the whole, CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA is a brilliant opportunity gone appallingly wrong. The film falls way below expectations and is a major disappointment in all respects. At the box-office, the hype might translate into a bountiful weekend, that's it. Thumbs down!

Goody diagnosed with cancer, leaves Bigg Boss

Twenty-seven year old Jade Goody pulled out of the reality show Bigg Boss 2 on Tuesday after it was revealed that she has cervical cancer, sources from the television channel Colors.

Jade's stay at the Bigg Boss house has been cut short with an unfortunate development. Only yesterday, the results of Jade's test were out [conducted in UK before her departure to India], and the tests indicate the possibility of cancer,' said a statement from Colors.

'Jade had just stayed in the Bigg Boss house for two days and was looking forward to reaching out to millions of Indians through Bigg Boss 2, to try and dispel various perceptions that exist in people's mind about her,' the statement added.

Goody made headlines last year during the British reality show Big Brother for her racial comments against housemate Shilpa Shetty [Images], who is now the host of Bigg Boss 2. Goody had come to India to participate in Bigg Boss to prove that she is no racist.

"It is unbelievable, how life is so unpredictable and finds a way to distract and derail you from your plans," Shilpa Shetty, the host of Bigg Boss 2, said. 'My prayers are with Jade, her family in this hour, when they face one of the biggest tests of their life, in times ahead. I pray she comes out of this, soon and, stronger. Hope that she is going back with happy memories from this country."

London's [Images] Sun newspaper quoting a friend of Goody said, 'She was called into the Diary Room and spoke to her agent and then her consultant in the UK. She just burst into tears, ran out and said to housemates 'I have cancer'. Jade was then led out of the house and she is coming back to England [Images] to see another consultant. She is completely devastated.'

The contestant earlier survived two cancer scares. She will be flown back to UK on Tuesday night. Sources reveal that the footage of the incident may not be aired.

Media reports suggest that she is the highest paid participant on the show, drawing about Rs 80 lakh.

What made you do the Unforgettable Tour?
I was assured about the shows being great, and they surely were! One of the key reasons for me loving the Tour was that I got to perform with Amitabh Bachchan, whom we all admire.

• What did you keep in mind before you agreed to be part of the shows?
My children, Arin and Ryan have always been my priority. Once that was settled, I only had to convince myself, and everything else was easy. I didn't think too hard before I agreed to be part of the Tour. My only concern was my kids. Once my family was okay with it, I did the shows.

• Was your husband, Dr Sriram Nene okay about you doing the shows too?
My husband hardly reacts to anything. We talked about it after which we mutually agreed that I should do the shows. We had to work out certain things like managing the affairs when I am not around. It is my family that I value. My mother-in-law is taking care of the kids while I am busy with the Tour. In fact, in the first leg of the Tour, my entire family, including my husband and kids came to watch the shows and support me.

• How did you feel while performing in front of your fans after such a long time?
It’s funny when people ask such questions. Once I stepped on the stage, it was like I had never been away. But I must say one thing, the Tour was a good opportunity for me to interact with and perform in front of my fans.

• You have never worked with Amitabh Bachchan, except for an item song in Bade Miyan Chhotte Miyan. How was it working with him?
It was simply great. He is an icon and you can learn a lot by just observing him on stage. I appreciate the fact that there was no interference by anyone. I had my own medley of songs, including ‘Dola re’.

• How was the situation backstage, especially since you haven’t worked with Abhishek Bachchan and Ritesh Deshmukh before?
We all kept complimenting each other and they would go like ‘You’re looking gorgeous’ and stuff! I have worked with Preity (Zinta) and Aishwarya (Rai) earlier, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Ritiesh and Abhishek perform so well on stage.

• When are you coming to India next?
Well, I have no plans of coming to India as of now. I will eventually return, but nothing is finalised right now.

• There are reports that you are doing Yash Chopra’s next film.
These are just rumours. I would love to work with him time and again, as we both respect each other immensely, but right now I am not doing any film.

Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty has expressed shock over her ex-rival Jade Goody's bid to take part in the Indian version of Britain's 'Big Brother' TV show.

After shooting non-stop for Chandni Chowk to China and Kambakht Ishq and delivering a hit in Singh Is Kinng, Akshay Kumar has packed his bags and left for Monte Carlo for a family holiday.

"I think I've earned my holiday. I was so nervous and tense before the release that I couldn't sleep," said Akshay before leaving for Monaco.

It's been a hectic month for the star. After his big release, he was ready for a holiday with wife Twinkle and son Aarav in Monte Carlo, but the visa didn't materialise. So he left for a weekend in Goa, returned to Mumbai Monday evening to celebrate the success of Singh Is Kinng with producer Vipul Shah and director Anees Bazmi and left the same night for Monte Carlo.

"Every time a release is around the corner, I put the desktop globe in front of my wife and tell her to pick a destination for a holiday. I told my wife that if my new film was a hit, I'll take her to Monte Carlo. If it doesn't work, we'll have to do with Mahabaleshwar," he joked.

The actor saw the film with his son, but the young boy missed the climax of his dad's new blockbuster. "Aarav never stays up beyond 10.30 p.m. But he watched Singh Is Kinng till he could, almost till the end. Then the poor fellow couldn't stay awake. He fell asleep in my lap... doesn't matter. He'll have lots of occasions to catch up with the film later," said Akshay.

The actor has many a reason to be happy and proud. Amitabh Bachchan, whom Akshay has described as the real king of Bollywood, has included the title song of Singh Is Kinng in his repertoire for his ongoing Unforgettable concerts.

"I know about Amitji singing the Singh Is Kinng song. It happened after the Toronto concert where I was on stage with the Bachchans."

In the 30 years that the mega-star has been performing live, he has never jammed to another actor's song before. "Really? That's what makes him the real king of Bollywood. All of us who came into the industry after Amitji have a lot to learn from him."

Mumbai, Aug 17: Bebo’s baby, Saif Ali Khan is sick and tired of clarifying things to the media every now and then; and says he is absolutely irritated for being misquoted all the time.

The actor, who has been shooting abroad for his home production, had a homecoming after long and carried a chit-chat with the media recently.

In an interview given to a news daily, the actor talked about Sylvester Stallone, being misquoted all the time and his infamous tattoo.

When asked how it felt to meet the legendary Stallone, Saifu said, “He’s awesome. He has an amazing tattoo of his beautiful wife on his shoulder. It’s a massive one and he suggested that I should get mine darkened or add red color to it. We discussed tattoos for a while. He's a very nice man. He called up his tattoo artist and fixed up an appointment, but I think its fine the way it is. That's all we talked about.”

Saif also clarified his stand on a news piece which had run with his name recently and had the actor expressing distress on how Muslims like him find it impossible to get land or house in certain suburbs of Mumbai. It's not just the common man who finds it difficult to buy or rent a house; even celebrities face the brunt. Bipasha Basu, had to struggle for more than a month to find rental accommodation. She is looking for alternate accommodation because her current apartment in Khar is being renovated.

The actress, whose film Bachna Ae Haseeno, releases today, says, "House-hunting is a tiresome job. After searching for months, I have now found a place to stay. It's a crazy situation: trying to handle my shootings and the interiors of both houses the rental and my own. I am going mad."

Finding a place

According to brokers from the Khar-Bandra area, the actress had been house hunting since a month, but couldn't find one. Says an estate agent from the area, "Her budget for rent was between Rs 1.06 and Rs 1.10 lakh, and she was looking for a 3BHK apartment. Apart from her budget, the other problem was her schedule.

"Bipasha could not see places on week days and was available only on Sundays, which further delayed the matter."

Bipasha is currently staying in her own apartment, on the topmost floor of Muktangan, which used to be Rakhee Gulzar's bungalow. She adds that she's lucky to have found a place close-by.

"It's not easy finding a flat these days. We can't just make a home anywhere there are certain prerequisites to making one. It has to be in the right neighbourhood, the place has to be good, and secure, as I live alone. And the one I've found is perfect and it has nice neighbours."

Now that the rented apartment is done up, Bips will shift there, while work on her apartment will start, "Only the finishing touches are left. It has to be done well as I will be staying there for eight months. I will shift to my new flat in five days. Now that Bachna releases today, barring a couple of functions I am quite free to concentrate on my flat in Muktangan along with interior designer Ahsaan."

I'd just be happy to spend it with Kareena (Kapoor) and my kids," Saif told IANS. But since his birthday falls on Rakhi day, he says he is expecting presents from his sisters Soha and Saba instead. I've quit smoking completely. This the healthiest time of my life." There were rumours that the actor had a panic attack while shooting in London last month. But he completely rubbishes them. "What nonsense! I don't even know what a panic attack is. Does it mean I thought I had a heart attack? No such thing happened to me." Saif has just returned from London and the US after one of the longest shooting stints abroad. "London has become Bollywood's favourite second home. Mine too. A lot of us actors love London. I spent a lot of my growing years in London. But I don't feel too much at home there. Mumbai is where I feel home is," said Saif, who's just back in the city after two months of shooting abroad. "Sadly I'm going off to Dubai to do a show, then I'm going to the US for an event. I also have to shoot in Kolkata, Delhi and Rajasthan to complete Imtiaz Ali's film. There's quite a lot of the film that remains so I'm hardly in Mumbai. It'd be nice to spend some time in Mumbai not working...just spending some time with the kids," Saif said. As far as films go, he has signed another film opposite Kareena to be produced by Ashthvinayak. "But I'm quite open to her working with other leading men. I think she's doing Imtiaz Ali's next film with another actor, just as I'm doing Imtiaz's current film with Deepika Padukone. So what? In a marked departure from his usual good-boy roles, Shahid Kapoor will play an anti-hero in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminay.

Says a friend of Shahid, "Every day in the morning, he asks Vishal, 'so what's the new bad thing I will do today?' In the film, Shahid plays a stylised bad guy who loots, steals and gambles. Upto now, the actor has always played the nice-guy-next-door and Kaminay is completely opposite to what he's played earlier."

The friend adds, "Normally, Shahid likes to take a break for every film. But this year, has been different. After Ken's film he went straight to a workshop with Vishal Bhardwaj and now he's shooting for Vishal's film. After that, he starts Yashraj's next.

Adnan Sami hospitalised

It is learnt that Adnan suddenly took ill on Monday and required immediate hospitalisation. Rumour is that the singer, who has lost over 100 kilos of weight, suffered from a heart problem and was rushed to a hospital in Juhu.

His publicist admits that Adnan is in hospital but states that it's a case of food poisoning. "He has been admitted to a private nursing home and is on the drip. As a result, he could not attend the 1920 music event.

Adnan suffered from severe food poisoning after consuming prawns. In fact, he was looking forward to the 1920 event and felt terrible that he could not make it. He is very fond of Vikram. He even checked with the doctors but they told him he was in no position to get up, how could he go for a function?"

The composer's publicist adds, "Adnan will be in hospital for a few more days."

It is also learnt that on Sunday, Adnan had requested Vikram for a special screening of 1920 for his music industry pals. "He had invited several music folk like Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu Nigam. Adnan along with wife Sana were present for the event. On Monday he fell ill," adds the publicist.

Bipasha feels the hotel she stayed in at Capri was one of the best experiences of her life. "It's called JK Place.

The biggest celebrities of the world visit there. I had the best room overlooking the ocean. It was the most gorgeous suite I had ever stayed in. I didn't want to work. I wanted to call my boyfriend over for a holiday."

Otherwise Italy was great fun."We finished work very fast everyday and went sightseeing in a big group to Rome. Capri was very cute and small. We were shooting in a villa.

We were all together all the time. I remember we couldn't get any chicken in Italy. There was other kinds of meat which I don't eat. When I finally got chicken I was so happy. Me, who's almost a diehard vegetarian."

Bipasha is now getting her house renovated and will plan this holiday as soon as John returns from Philadelphia were he's shooting for Kabeer Khan's New York.

"John has been shooting with Neil Nitin Mukesh, while I've rented a place close to where I live. I'll shift to that place while my house is being renovated. It took me a while to find the rented place.

At the moment the rented place is being done up, so I can move into it while renovation starts in my house.I'm waiting for the other place to be ready.

But in the meanwhile I'm staying in my own place without a bed in a makeshift corner while the workers get busy hammers and tongs.So you see, I'm not in a very happy state of mind. A good time to take a holiday."

Actress and singer Sherlyn Chopra will no longer join the Housemates in 'Bigg Boss' as she has been shown the door. Sherlyn, who was in discussion to be cast on the show, could not close the deal as her two conditions could not be met on time.

Apparently, the newbie asked for a sum of Rs 3 crore for her 3-month appearance in the 'Bigg Boss' House.

Since, after her first music album 'Outrageous', her second album 'Dard-e-Sherlyn' has also become a runaway success, she felt that only a decent price could keep her inside the House for a whole three months.

It is also learnt that Sherlyn suggested that the makers install cameras even in bathrooms of the House, so that she could flaunt her vast collection of colourful bikinis and inner wear while bathing. It seems she was keen to generate loads of teenage interest in the show from both sexes.

It can be recalled that the practice of cameras in the bathrooms of such a reality show existed in UK's 'Big Brother' earlier, until Shilpa Shetty got the practice discontinued two years ago, with a clause in her contract stating it went against her ethics and culture. Paint peeled from the walls. Monsoon rain dripped from the ceiling. Outside, a procession of journalists trudged through puddles and mud, then up the rickety wooden staircase and past a container of lukewarm chai and a plate of soggy biscuits.

And there she was, Katrina Kaif, sitting in a chair at the room's far end, talking about her upcoming release, with Singh is Kinng cardboard cut-outs propped against the wall behind her.

She looked almost captive, like a hostage, with lights, cameras and microphones bearing down on her. But rather than scared, she seemed a touch irritated and a tad drained. One could sympathise, given the flock of hungry reporters circling about, waiting for their exclusives. She doesn't give them often, after all.

There was also a hint of confrontation in her voice, when a reporter interviewing her pushed personal questions past the point of comfort, asking, "When are you getting married," to which Ms Kaif responded, "When are you getting married?" before affecting a strange laugh that rang hollow. Later, she did mention, "As of right now, I've no plans to get married."

The reluctance to answer personal questions was obvious, and really, why should she? Newspaper society sections and the gossip mags are already filled with speculation about her private life, especially her relationship with the 42-year old Salman Khan.

The last month has been particularly intensive, following her now infamous 24th birthday bash. Recent rumours say that the party was a last-ditch effort from Salman to save a romance going wayward, though it went all wrong, thanks to the the much-detailed disagreement between beau Sallu and Shah Rukh Khan. There's also talk that Salman's family doesn't think so kindly of the pretty lass, though Katrina remains tight-lipped on all things related to her love life.

But regarding the party, the battle of the Khans wasn't the only thing that had people talking, the guest list has also received extreme scrutiny. Why was so and so off the list? It was five years ago that Katrina Kaif, then 19, arrived in Mumbai to make a career in the modelling industry. Accompanying her were mother Susana and sisters Christine and Isabella. She did not celebrate her birthday that year. This year as she turned 24 on July 16, almost the entire film industry A-list descended at Olive Bar & Kitchen, a Mumbai restaurant and bar, to wish the model-turned-actress.

"I was all alone on my first birthday in Mumbai. I hardly stepped out of my house, as I didn't know anyone then," says the actress. This year it was celebrated, according to a guest, with flavoured Martinis, an assortment of mocktails, lamb chop, balsamic mushroom, grilled prawns and rock salt fish doing the rounds.

Katrina had over 70 people including stars, star wives, star kids, filmmakers, producers, designers and choreographers attending her private bash. Not surprisingly Katrina says it is only this year that she feels a sense of belonging to the industry. That she speaks Hindi and has a string of box-office hits can only add to her being at home.

"I know so many people now. I'm a part of the circuit and also part of discussions for movies that are being planned. I'm aware of what's happening around," she says.

A large part of the credit in making Katrina feel comfortable in the film fraternity goes to beau Salman Khan, who is dating the model-turned-actress for a little over four years now.

Katrina describes herself as the submissive one in the intense relationship. "I think by nature I'm slightly more submissive. Cancerians are docile people," she says.

Salman and his extended family supported her during the formative years of her career. "I do remember the first time I had met Salman but these are personal things," says the actress who spends considerable time at Galaxy Apartments, Salman's Bandra residence, whenever she is in Mumbai.

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu is miffed at being tagged as the seniormost actor in "Bachna Ae Haseeno", which is releasing Friday, and says she has started feeling someone as old as legendary Amitabh Bachchan.

She co-stars with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, who are just one film old. Minissha Lamba and Karan Kapoor are also in the movie.

"People have been calling me the seniormost actor in the film. I almost feel like Amitabh Bachchan now. The others in the film are extremely good actors and not at all inexperienced, " Bipasha told.

"They have a lot of experience and have absolute clarity in their mind on what they want to do. They are very spontaneous and we even get together very well in that way, " added Bipasha who was seen in this year's first big hit "Race".

She is also very upset with some media houses spreading stories on her and Deepika Padukone's "animosity". But she admits there is a problem with Katrina unlike Kareena, Deepika and Minissha.

She says, "We should realise that women are transparent creatures and we can't be friends with anybody. Kareena and I had a problem so many years back that today I don't even remember today what it was.

I don't know Kareena as a person but today I can say openly I don't have any problems with her. People then created an awkwardness and with constant repetition the problem got aggravated but I hold no grudges. She's a wonderful actress."

But there is a problem with Katrina Kaif with whom she acted in Race? The buzz was that they didn't talk to each other at all during the film's shooting. Bipasha admits, "Yes there is a problem between Katrina and me. We didn't speak during Race but that never stopped shooting.

If she met Kareena or Katrina at a social event would she be cordial and greet them warmly? "I could walk up to Kareena and do that; but no, I can't do that with Katrina. There is an awkwardness between Katrina and me. We don't talk to each other."

Bipasha was here with her co-stars and director Siddharth Anand to promote the film that traces the journey of a young boy from the age of 18 to 30.

In the film, Bipasha plays an aspiring actress who travels to Mumbai from Ranchi to fulfil her dreams but ends up working with Shiamak Davar's dance troupe.

"The character in the film is just like me. Radhika works and keeps her relationship going simultaneously. The role is very contemporary. She is an effortless dresser. She wears shorts and vests and uses all kinds of funky bags and accessories."

The dusky beauty says she enjoyed shooting for the film.

"I was completely pampered on the sets and have finally made two great friends in Ranbir and Siddharth. I have not spent enough time with the girls though."

"Bachna Ae Haseeno" has been extensively shot abroad at locations like Venice, Switzerland, Sydney and 15 towns of Italy.

Bipasha enjoyed her Italy stint the most.

She said: "I got a lot of compliments in Italy for the clothes I was wearing. Italian men only know how to romance. They are impeccably dressed with styled hair and they only want to marry you."

When it comes to escapist cinema, a gifted writer can make his imagination run really wild. Think of a crazy story, come up with outrageous and zany situations, rope in actors who'd look believable in those parts... hey presto, a crazy potboiler is ready to be served.

Rumy Jafry, who has penned some crazy comedies in the past, does just that. He borrows [partly] from BRUCE ALMIGHTY, also [partly] from YEHI HAI ZINDAGI [Sanjeev Kumar] and [partly] uses his imagination to come up with GOD TUSSI GREAT HO. But this khichdi isn't as delicious as one expects it to be.

GOD TUSSI GREAT HO has some really interesting moments. At least two sequences -- [i] When a dejected Salman throws the taveez in the air, the taveez reaches God, later God appears in human form and [ii] Salman invents a chair that acts as a lie detector and teaches Sohail Khan a lesson -- are pure magic in terms of writing, in terms of execution, in terms of performance.

nother ace is Salman Khan. The boyish appeal, the mischievous look, the loud-but-lovable act just cannot be overlooked.

But GOD TUSSI GREAT HO isn't as captivating and arresting at times. The potential to come up with an energetic second half are immense in a film like this, but Rumy Jafry's writing is plain mediocre. Besides, the second hour is lengthy, it gets tedious ['Lal Chunariya' song should be deleted right away]. Also, the pre-climax and climax don't sweep you off your feet.

In a nutshell, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO does appeal, but in bits and spurts. Not in totality. An average experience!

At the end of the worst day in his life, Arun [Salman Khan] angrily rages against God for making his life miserable. To his astonishment, God [Amitabh Bachchan] appears before him in human form and endowing Arun with all of His divine powers, challenges Arun to take on the big job and see if he can do it any better.

Arun responds to his newfound powers with childlike zeal and sets off making one decision after another. The love of his life Alia [Priyanka Chopra] is astonished at the 'new' decisive and confident Arun. He thinks he can make the world a happy place by granting everybody their wishes.

But to his horror, this results in unprecedented mayhem. Ultimately, Arun realises that he is only human, and being God is tougher than he thought.

Rumy Jafry has penned several solid entertainers for David Dhawan and the formula looms large all through GOD TUSSI GREAT HO. Rumy rides on myths and comedy to get it right and it really works at times. However, after a point, the writing doesn't spring any surprises. You know exactly what's in store next and that's what bogs the film down.

In terms of impact, the best portions are between Bachchan and Salman, between Salman and Anupam Kher and between Salman and Rajpal Yadav. These tracks charge up the scenario. But how one misses a meatier script in the second hour.

Directorially, Rumy Jafry's work gets easier thanks to the presence of seasoned actors. But he needs to polish his skills as far as technique is concerned. The film could've been stylishly shot. Sajid-Wajid's music is strictly okay. However, the picturisation of songs camouflages the deficiency. Ashok Mehta's cinematography is perfect. The production design/making could've been grand, given the presence of such powerful names in the cast. Special effects lack finesse.

As always, Amitabh Bachchan is competent. But GOD TUSSI GREAT HO belongs to Salman Khan, who seems to be in form this time. Priyanka doesn't match Salman's enthusiasm. Also, why is her look so inconsistent in the film? Sohail Khan is alright.

Anupam Kher is fantastic. Bina Kak is fair. Rukhsaar doesn't get much scope. Rajpal Yadav provides a few laughs. Dalip Tahil is as usual. Upasna Singh is getting typecast. Ditto for Sanjay Mishra.

On the whole, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO is average in merits, providing a few laughs intermittently. At the box-office, the holiday weekend should benefit the film. But beyond the weekend, the journey could be uneven. However, single screens should fare better in the Hindi belt.

BACHNA AE HASEENO is special. Ranbir Kapoor is cast opposite teen deviyaan -- Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Minissha Lamba. It's produced by a premier production house, the credits read 'Story by Aditya Chopra' and most importantly, it's helmed by Siddharth Raj Anand, who merged form and content so beautifully in SALAAM | NAMASTEY and TA RA RUM PUM. The expectations, therefore, are humungous.

Before we go any further, let's clear a misconception at the very outset. BACHNA AE HASEENO is not inspired by THE BACHELOR [the industry feels so, hence this clarification], but it bears an uncanny resemblance to the yesteryear film TEEN DEVIAN [1965; Dev Anand, Nanda, Kalpana, Simi Grewal] and Telugu film AUTOGRAPH [Raviteja, Bhoomika, Mallika, Gopika, Kanyaka]. Of course, Chopra and the screenplay writer try to be different and any resemblance with any film could be purely coincidental.

Now let's move on! BACHNA AE HASEENO has a great cast, great chemistry amongst actors [so sizzling, it could melt butter], great locations [jaw dropping actually] and some great moments. But all these factors combined together don't make a great film. BACHNA AE HASEENO suffers, to a major extent, due to its screenplay running out of steam in the second hour.

The gist of the story is truly captivating -- the guy is a complete flirt, he wears his heart on his sleeve. Enter three women in different stages of his life. Love is in the air. Two dream of marrying him, but he ditches them and the third, whom he intends marrying, says a blunt 'No' to the offer. Heart-broken, the guy realizes his folly and plans on doing prayashchit. He goes back to the first two women and apologises. Wow! A story to bowl you over indeed!

BACHNA AE HASEENO has splendid moments in the first hour. In fact, the three stories, minus the culmination of course, are beautifully told in the first hour itself. There're some attention-grabbing moments in this hour [details later] and you genuinely feel exhilarated after having watched those portions.

Now to the second hour -- the guy repents for his misdeeds and years later, goes back to the first two women in his life. That's where the problems surface...

From the writing point of view, the first story [Minissha] is given an appropriate and beautiful culmination in the second hour. But the second [Bipasha] and third [Deepika] stories face rough weather. These stories don't work and therefore, colour your judgement on the movie. Like it happens with most Hindi films, the writing is the culprit here as well. It lacks the power to keep you hooked in the second hour.

In a nutshell, BACHNA AE HASEENO could've been the ideal youthful entertainer, occupying the position that JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA enjoys amongst the yuppy crowd. But as things stand now, it's a great looking film with nothing outstanding about it. Strictly okay for a single watch, that's about it!

Meet Raj [Ranbir Kapoor]. He falls in love thrice...

The film talks of three love stories: Raj and Mahi [Minissha], Raj and Radhika [Bipasha], Raj and Gayatri [Deepika]. Different ladyloves at different times in his life. And each of them teach him a little bit about love and a little bit about life, in their own sweet, sexy or sassy way.

Director Siddharth Raj Anand knows the craft too well by now and his handling of the romantic and emotional scenes is worth appreciating. Take the sequence at the airport -- Minissha stands stunned listening to Ranbir's tale of 'conquest', with tears rolling down her cheeks. The silence says it all!

Note the sequence when Ranbir woos Bipasha, but eventually dumps her on the eventful day. It's raining and Bipasha just can't come out of the shock. The silence is deafening! Note yet another tragic end to the love story, when Deepika refuses the wedding proposal from Ranbir. Flashes from the past come alive at this point. It couldn't get better!

Post-interval, Ranbir's story with an already-married Minissha and her husband is equally moving. Ranbir's apology looks convincing and the culmination to this chapter couldn't be better. Ranbir moves on to Bipasha and it's here that the writing begins to go downhill. She's a wounded tigress and no amount of cajoling or apologies from Ranbir would melt her. So far, so good! But the path she uses to teach Ranbir a lesson is weird, sorry ludicrous.

The third story, with Deepika, is written in haste, one presumes. The girl suddenly has a change of heart and wants to marry Ranbir, she even writes to him everyday, not knowing that he's out of town. The culmination to this story is amateurish and one wonders whether the writer was in a tearing hurry to end the movie since the 2-hour mark had already been crossed.

Directorially, Siddharth Raj Anand offers stunning visuals and some really fine performances, but is letdown by the script. Vishal-Shekhar's music is just alright, nothing to rave or rant about. Barring 'Khuda Jaane' and 'Lucky Boy', the remaining songs don't have a lingering effect. Cinematography is a class apart. Besides, the cinematographer gets some spectacular locales and he does complete justice to it. Dialogues are good at times.

Ranbir Kapoor is marvellous. An incredible actor. One will run out of adjectives and personifications describing his performance. Amongst girls, Bipasha Basu stands the tallest. First RACE and now BACHNA AE HASEENO, the actress is finally getting the right roles that do justice to her talent. Also, she looks fab! Minissha doesn't work at the start, but scores in the emotional scenes, especially in the second hour. Deepika is a sore point. Her role isn't convincing and that's the reason why this performance doesn't work. The only consolation is, she looks gorgeous.

Kunal Kapoor is supremely efficient, handling his role with utmost maturity. Hiten Paintal is a revelation, a talent to watch out for. His camaraderie with Ranbir is top notch.

On the whole, BACHNA AE HASEENO has an interesting first half, but a weak second hour spoils the show. At the box-office, thanks to the hype built around the film, the opening weekend should be great, but beyond that, has tough chances of sustaining. Multiplexes at some big centres would be better, but that's no consolation.

Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone, who is set for her second release "Bachna Ae Haseeno", is feeling ecstatic after topping the popular Maxim Hot 100 girls' worldwide list.

"I really didn't expect it. I'm really excited. People always used to call me either cute or pretty, but no one ever called me sexy. I take it as a compliment, " Deepika told.

Although the young actress is flattered by the title, she did not feel even a tad embarrassed.

"There is nothing wrong in being called sexy. I think the term itself has been misunderstood. People think that a person is sexy only if she is wearing tiny clothes. But for me, being sexy is about being mysterious and having your own personality and certainly has nothing to do with a person's fashion sense, " she held.

After being a top model, and coming up with a successful debut with super hit "Om Shanti Om", Deepika has become a Bollywood star, but she says stardom hasn't affected her as her feet are firmly grounded.

"Stardom has not changed me. I believe I am the same person. I am too new in the industry. I like being in front of the camera and I love acting, " said the 22-year-old.

"I'm very close to my parents and they handle my money. I even discuss my work with them every evening, " added the actress who is set for her second release, "Bachna Ae Haseeno".

While in "Om Shanti Om" Deepika shared screen space with superstar Shah Rukh Khan, she has been paired opposite real life beau Ranbir Kapoor in "Bachna Ae Haseeno". The romantic drama also stars Minissha Lamba and Bipasha Basu and is being directed by Siddharth Anand.

In the film, Deepika plays an NRI girl called Gayatri.

"Gayatri is an independent girl who knows what she wants. She is focussed. She is modern as well as traditional in her thoughts. The role is very similar to the person I am."

The actress, who will be seen with Akshay Kumar in "Chandni Chowk To China", says both she and Ranbir are focussing on their career and try to give as much space as possible to each other.

"Right now we are focussing on our career and what we are doing in front of the camera. At the end of the day, we are both actors. One plays a certain character in a film and so we cannot let possessiveness come in between. We have to understand each other."

Having already worked with big banners like Red Chillies Entertainment and Yash Raj Films, will Deepika stick to only big banners in future?

"I want to focus on commercial cinema as of now. But, if I find any offbeat film or a small production house with a good role, I would love to go for it, " she said.

She has been roped in to play an important role in "Jab We Met" fame director Imtiaz Ali's next venture.

Recounts the film's director Nikhil Advani, " There were some scenes which we thought to be too dangerous. But she insisted on doing away with the body double and also the wirings.

She's very athletic, it runs in her family. Then there was Akshay to inspire her. Akshay had done so much onscreen action. It was a novel experience for Deepika. And she sailed through the action.

She worked really hard to get the posture and power in the action scenes. Those who've seen her in Om Shanti Om will be shocked"

More shocks. "Chandni Chowk To China is a children's film. I don't think kids will try to attempt to climb the nearest wall to fight after watching the film. But I think we'll have lots of kids joining karate classes."

Before making his mirthful martial -arts film, Nikhil Advani sat down with his leading man Akshay Kumar and watched any number of karate flicks.

"Before I started making this film my interest in the martial arts was restricted to Jackie Chan, Et Li, Bruce Lee and the crouching tigers of the world. But Akshay Kumar brought out the hidden dragon in me. He made me watch a lot of action scenes.

Before we left for China he'd make me sit down every morning and make me watch one kung Fu film and explain the subtexts. By the time we left to shoot I understood the martial arts much better."

"All the shooting is done, " sighs a fatigued Advani. "Finally we Indians have invaded China. We were gone for 95 days. We shot for 89 days in Shanghai and in the interiors of China and lots of action sequences on top of the Great Wall Of China."

Nikhil was being pushed into a Diwali release. "But the post-production is very complicated. The action sequences are like nothing we generally see. The story doesn't stop.

The action builds the plot and characters. We've shot it exactly the way we want.I don't want to rush the release. Akshay's superstardom isn't going away anywhere."

The film has been inspired by Akshay Kumar's real-life story. "The film's flavour comes from Akshay's real life. He's a boy from Chandni Chowk who went to Bangkok as a cook.

My writer Sridhar Raghavan wrote the role with Akshay's real-life story in mind. The character's personality comes alive through Akshay. Thanks to him we finished ahead of schedule."

Hi, how have you been? You sound excited.
I am good and yes, I am excited too. Come on! You know why.

Must be because you are opposite Ranbir in BACHNA AE HASEENO.
Well I play only one of his haseenas. But I am really excited because it's a big film for me. From long time I have been waiting for such an offer to come my way and I really feel blessed and honoured.

Is it all because the film comes from Yash Raj banner?
Who wouldn't have been...say? They are the biggest in India and for an actor like me who is only three years old in the industry it's a big thing. I think my good work has finally paid for me and I will try and utilize this in the days to come.

So, you think this has been by far the biggest thing to happen in your career?
(Laughs) I have done quite a few films and whether all have worked or not my performance has been appreciated. That has always been a kind of satisfaction for me. But I have always believed in going slow and not losing patience. And that's how this film happened.

So how was the entire experience of working with Yash Raj?
In one word awesome!! The best thing about the film was that it was a young team and we all had a ball. The film is a very sweet romantic film and that is what will draw the audience to the theatres. They are bound to enjoy it.

The realm of unknown and the morbid fear of treading into this territory has been a source of eternal inspiration for the filmmakers to revisit it. As a genre of filmmaking horror films have been hitting the marquee on a regular basis and have been scoring bulls' eye as well. No wonder, Ram Gopal Verma, who was one of the first in the modern times to use this genre with PHOONK, is visiting this brand of film making for the fourth time in his career. His first foray in this realm was through RAAT, which established him as a director who had the ability to scare the wits out of your souls and give it a drubbing. It was followed by BHOOT, DARNA MANA HAI and PHOONK is following in this genre from the stable of Ram Gopal Verma.

If one were to explore the commercial reason for revisiting this genre, these kinds of films take very less time to complete, as unknown does not need a star to sell the product. Besides, it does not entail different locations one location serves the purpose. If all the horror films were viewed from this perspective, it would be found that most of them begin and end on a single location and the films culminate at that location as well. It would be owing to the fact that the element of haunt is perceived either to be in an individual or in a physical structure and therefore it becomes a fulcrum around which whole of the films revolve.

Ram Gopal Verma was different in the sense that he used established and mainstream stars like Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgun, and Rekha in his second film BHOOT and seemed to draw inspiration from Raj Kumar Kohli, who was a specialist in making multi-starrer horror films of the like of JAANI DUSHMAN.

The biggest boost to the genre of horror films was the success of BHOOL BHULAIYA. The success seemed to be owing to the fact that the specter of horror was interpreted with scientific rationality. It is what appealed to the multiplex going generation of the present times.

There however is a flip side to this argument that the belief in horror, spirits etc., has more profound beliefs in the semi-urban areas and rural areas. As a result, it is always an existentialist dilemma for the filmmaker whether to interpret the realm of unknown through religion and beliefs or interpret it from a rationalist perspective.

Keeping in view the manner in which the education and the awareness is increasing, probably it would be a better choice to interpret it from a scientific perspective as well, as it would facilitate in bringing established film stars to this genre as well. It would also open up and expand the market and this may lead to more experimentations and broader canvas. Would PHOONK initiate this beginning?

Bollywood's dusky beauty Bipasha Basu has carved a niche for herself in Hindi cinema and says she has no intentions of going to Hollywood because filmmakers there are familiar with only one Indian actor - Aishwarya Rai.

"No filmmakers of Hollywood are willing to sign any Bollywood actor without a screen test apart from Aishwarya. They seem to know no Hindi film actors, not even Amitabh Bachchan, " Bipasha told.

"I got a chance to go there, but I found out that I will have start again from scratch like screen tests and other tantrums. They treat you like a newcomer. So I decided to stay in Mumbai and be the 'queen' here, " said the actress who was in town to promote "Bachna Ae Haseeno".

Talking about the film with newcomer Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha said she signed on because she hadn't done a romantic movie for quite some time.

"I haven't done an out-an-out romantic film for a long time so when I heard the script of this film, I found it a little fresh.

"I play Radhika, who comes all the way from Ranchi to Mumbai to become an actor. But she ends up being a member of (choreographer) Shiamak Davar's dance troupe."

Bipasha doesn't seem to mind sharing screen space with two other actresses - Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone in the film.

"I am okay with even a 10-minute role provided I get an apt character and my share of attention on screen. Anyway, if you are a Bollywood heroine, you have very limited choice. I was intelligent enough to realise it long back and hence am picking up roles that look good on-screen, " she said.

Why did you say yes to the offer to be the host for Bigg Boss Season 2?
I said yes to the offer because it will be something new as far as I am concerned since I have never hosted any TV show earlier in my career though I had taken part in the reality dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on Sony TV as one of the judges. I have always liked to explore newer avenues in life and add to my dimensions as a human being.

To what extent you will be able to gel with the show?
I think I will take to the show like a fish to water for the simple reason that I am very familiar with the format of the show since I have been a part of the show Big brother earlier.

I am confident that unlike Arshad Warsi who was the host the last time around of the show, I would be able to empathize more with the house mates since I have gone through the entire procedure as a housemate in Big Brother and I would be the only 'outside' human connection with them.

How do you feel as the host of the show?
I have been through what all the 14 hand picked contestants will go through and therefore I am able to understand their needs and feelings. I remember what it was to live with strangers in a house cut off from the outside world with nobody to trust and vouch for.

However I am sure about one thing. It will surely change the lives of the participants and give them memories to last a life time to emerge as stronger individuals.

How tough do you think is your task going to be as a hostess?
I van vouchsafe that it is not going to be a very easy task since you have got to deal with raw human emotions when you deal with the housemates in the show.

I hope I will be able to garner better TRP ratings for the show Big Boss Season 2 by being able to strike the chords of not only the audience but also the housemates who are going to take part in the show.

How have you decided to conduct your task?
As I said earlier, I have been though the entire experience abroad in Big Brother and hence it will be easier for me to relate to the housemates of Bigg Boss Season 2 this time around. I will make it entertaining besides adding a human touch to my task as the host.

Besides Sambhavana Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Sherlyn Chopra and Jhanvi Kapoor, who do you think are the other housemates in the show this time?
To tell you the truth, I have no idea about who the housemates in the show are going to be in this season of the show.

I guess the channel Colors does not want to divulge the names to the audience because in that case, the suspense cannot be built up and it wants to spring a surprise on not only the audience but also the housemates every week when a new housemate enters the show

Why do you think people take the risk of going to Bigg Boss Season 2?
People go for two reasons. Reason No 1 is that they have nothing to hide from the world and the reason No 2 is that they want to be more famous than what they are and also make more money.

Do you remember your tryst at the Big Brother?
I still remember how eagerly all of us housemates used to wait to hear Debina's voice every week when she used to come to connect with us from the outside world. I remember her voice used to be very warm and friendly. It is an important role to play in the show as the hostess.

In what way is Bigg Boss Season 2 going to be different from Big Brother UK?
This year unlike the first season, the show which will premiere on August 17 on Colors will be on air every day of the week from Monday to Sunday at 10 pm. It will be a bigger, better, meaner and gruesome real time drama.

Is it true that there is going to be a half an hour LIVE, unedited slot every day?
Yes. Starting from the second week, every day at 12.30 am, there is going to be a half an hour LIVE unedited slot at midnight, though in keeping with the Indian sensibility, the show will be censored by the channel so that nothing objectionable is shown to the audience.

Is it true that celebrities will be replaced by newsmakers in this season?
Yes. Bigg Boss Season 2, the Indian version of Big Brother UK comes with its unique twists this year that make it bigger and better with newsmakers replacing the celebrities in the show.

If there is an opportunity, would you be game to enter the Big Brother UK for a second time, as a housemate?
No. I would not go to Big Brother UK for the second time because one time is more than enough to last me a LIFE TIME. When I went there for the first time, I did not know that it would be so difficult, because unlike in Bigg Boss Season 1, there was culture clash right from Day One and I found it difficult to cope with that initially.

It is only after the first three days that it starts sinking in you that you are in an entirely different world where you have to fend for yourself.

Were you confident that you would be a winner in Big brother when you entered it?
Though frankly I did not think that I would last for even two weeks there, I lasted in Big Brother UK, because I went there with the mind- sight not to fear.

What did your stint at Big Brother UK teach you?
It taught me the highs and lows of life around. It is only when you spend time in a place like Big Brother that you will really come to know how a person really is, without the mask which conceals his or her face.

Would you advise your younger sister Shamita to go as a housemate in Bigg Boss season 2?
Forget about going to Bigg Boss Season 2, my sister Shamita will not even listen to any advice of mine, because she is a highly individualistic girl with her own mind

What is your advice to the housemates?
All that I can advise every housemate is to be true to him or herself, because who the audience find as endearing will not be decided if you are fake.

People will be interested in seeing the other aside of you as a celebrity or a newsmaker and hence please do not do things only for the sake of entertainment. The housemates who are otherwise so dependent on external factors will start learning new things every day during their tenure at Bigg Boss Season 2.

Since your film, God Tussi Great Ho, is releasing this Friday, it'll be interesting to know in which situation do you say the film's title?
I say that in each and every situation. No matter what happens I always thank God. Agar yeh nahi bologe toh aap nashukr ho (if you don't say this then you're thankless). God has given me so much and I just have to appreciate it.

What kind of a relationship do you share with God?
(He blows a kiss to the sky) That's my rapport with God. I talk to him all the time. I always get my answers from him. Sure, there have been instances when he doesn't listen to me and doesn't give me what I ask for but he does that only when I don't deserve it. I've observed that whenever God hasn't given me what I asked for, it's for the best.

You do a lot of comedy films, what is it that clicks with the audience about your comic style?
I think it's the sincerity and the person's personality that the audience relates to.

Which is your all time favourite comic film?
Andaaz Apna Apna. I've only seen the whole thing once but whenever I happen to catch it on television I end up being glued to it.

Is it true that there is going to be a sequel to Andaaz Apna Apna?
That's what I hear. Aamir (Khan) wants to do it. It all depends on our director Rajkumar Santoshi. I'm game for it.

You come across as a very warm and affable host on 10 Ka Dum, how do you make sure to be always in a good mood?
It's very simple. If you come to my house and you are being nice to me so why wouldn't I be nice to you? I don't fake anything. If I'm not in a good mood then that too shows on screen. But bad mood doesn't mean that I've to behave badly. I try and be a good host.

But you're not comfortable with women hugging you?
(Shrugs) They come in, they are very sweet to me and I don't mind it if they hug me. That's their way of showing affection and I respect that.

But are you a hugging person?
Nope. I'm not an exhibitionist, not a demonstrative person. No hugs for me.

But you do know how to throw the most talked about party?
It was Katrina Kaif's party. Maybe it'll be talked about for decades to come but definitely not by me. I'm not going to speak about it.

But was there a fight with Shah Rukh Khan?
Yeah.

What led to the fight?
Have you ever known me to speak about anybody? Whatever happened is between me and Shah Rukh. It's personal.

Is Shah Rukh your friend?
Not anymore. I'm not going to deny that there are issues between us. I'm a primitive man born in today's time. I can't fake anything. If there is a problem then I'm not going to deny it. We've had problems before also but this time I don't think we can sort them out. We are two different people.

Our values and way of thinking are different. I don't think we can be friends. I think it's better to declare that then put on a fake façade of being friends and back-biting each other.

But there is a lot of shared history between you and SRK, didn't he stay at your house in his struggling days?
(Smiles) Yeah but I've only been to his house twice in my life. The first time I went on my own and the second time was when he came and took me to his house for a chat.

The buzz is that professional rivalry between the two of us especially with regards, your respective shows, Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain and 10 Ka Dum, led to the fight?
No, I don't think it's because my show is doing better. I don't think he's that insecure. The reason of the fight is personal.

Is it because he refused to act in your home production, Main Aur Mrs Khanna?
Let me make it clear once and for all that Main Aur Mrs Khanna was never offered to SRK. I was always doing the film. It's just that when Shah Rukh used to come to my home to ask me to appear on Kaun Banega Crorepati and Om Shanti Om, I just mentioned it to him that it'll be nice if he has the time to listen to the story. That's all.

It seems you and Aamir Khan are the latest best friends. You're gifting him paintings etc?
Aamir and I have always got along. I made his portrait and gifted to him. What's the big deal?

There are rumours that you and Akshay Kumar share cold vibes too. True?
No, no, not at all. Akshay is a colleague. He's a nice guy. He is very hardworking and keeps to himself. Akshay will work hard to bring himself up and not to bring someone else down.

Every second day there are stories of you and Katrina Kaif either breaking up or making up. What's the status?
First of all, I want to know who are all these friends, sources close to me and my family who speak on our behalf?

My friends will never speak like that about me or anyone close to me because they will give their life for me. Obviously it's someone who is insecure, jealous and friendly to the press. Maybe they are someone else's friends.

Ranbir-Bipasha coziness leaves Deepika fuming

The Bengali beauty, Bipasha Basu seems to be quite a man’s lady. Even been with John Abraham, she had the famous controversial kiss with the football star, Christino Ronaldo.

Now the Bengali beauty seems to be interested in Deepika Padukone’s boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor.

Early the Dusky babe had admitted that she was really fond of Ranbir. What had put fire over it was that Bipasha insisted to the organizers that it should be her and not Deepika who will enter the stage with Ranbir first at a recent show.

Deepika didn’t like this and she made it sure that it will be her and not Bipasha to enter first.

Things went from bad to worse when Bipasha made a grand entry with Ranbir leaving Deepika into fumes.

You'd think when producer Vashu Bhagnani and director David Dhawan get together after Hero No 1 and Biwi No 1, the film will have a name suggesting a link among the Hero, the Biwi and No. 1. Not so. Vashu's first film with David in 9 years has been given the title Do Knot Disturb. Sushmita and Govinda who came together in the fiasco Kyunki Main Jhooth Nahin Bolta in 2002 were meant to come together for Dharmesh Darshan's new film this year. The plans were aborted and in fact Sushmita preferred to stay away from all outside offers to focus on her dream home-production Rani Laxmibai. But then both Vashu and David, old friends whom she's sentimental about because they fashioned her first hit Biwi No 1, urged her to be a part of their first collaboration in 9 years. "It's an out-and-out comedy, " says Vashu. "Let's not pretend about that. But it's an original idea and script. When David and I come together we can't fool around with people's expectations. I haven't made a film in nine years. Now I'm simultaneously launching my son Jackie in Vivek (Bhootnath) Sharma's Kal Kissne Dekha that will be shooting in Soith Africa while I'll be with David and the crew for Do Knot Disturb in Delhi." Papa Bhagnani doesn't want to be looking anxiously at his son's debut. "I'd rather be with David, Govinda and Sush." Adds David Dhawan, "When Govinda says he has full faith in me I get frightened. Will I be able to deliver again this time? I can't say our film is spectacularly different from what we've done so far. But at the same time I must admit audiences want to see something different. Look at Jannat Its success is so welcome. But I can't do something too different with Govinda because I can't play around with audiences' expectations."
